If you are a wide reader and you are a fan of the classics like the works of Jane Austen, or the Wuthering Heights, or even the plays of Shakespeare, then it is a fact that almost all of these books that are dated way back during the Medieval times involved women or even people who are reading. And these books were set in the urban areas. It is seldom that we find books that were written during those times that were set in the rural areas.
Why am I pointing this out to you? It is because of the fact that this is the proof that this trend of conducting events during the Summer Season especially reading programs have already been developing during those times because people already loved books even during that era.
It’s just sad because nowadays the only offered reading programs are for children. There is not a single statistic record of adults undergoing reading programs during the summer. It is quite unfortunate because these summer programs provide the family with a variety of benefits like: the encouragement that reading would become a lifelong habit, keeping children’s skills up, having reluctant readers drawn in by the activities, and it could also be a good bonding time for the family. Indeed, a family that reads together stays together.
In New York, there are some goals that Summer Reading Programs are aiming to achieve:
- During the summer months, they encourage teens and children to engage into reading programs to help them improve their reading and comprehension skills. They will be involved in the various reading related activities in the program.
- They also aim to develop a love for reading by holding public library programs and services.
- Giving readers the prerogative to choose the reading material that they like with the assistance of the librarian so as to achieve a successful reading experience.
- Be sure to involve the parents and the whole family in the endeavor.
- Be able to improve children’s access to the library equipment and tools, and also their activities and materials to encourage them to become lifelong library users.
- Promote the summer reading program and have more teens and children attend these programs.
It is a very good thing for the Public Libraries to hold this kind of program because they are surely being able to help those children who are in need of resources and even those children who already have resources but do not have the attention that they are yearning for from their parents. This can be the bridge for closer family ties and being able to help those who are most in need of proper education during the summer.
This trend of having Summer Reading Programs in New York has been one of the priorities of a huge number of families there. Besides from this endeavor being highly educational, it also does magic to the family ties. Plus, it also provides the greatest help to those people who are most in need of educational resources.
